A study permit file is not a pile of PDFs. It is a chain of proof. Each document needs to answer the question IRCC is asking in that upload slot. The wrong document in the wrong place can create delay, refusal, or a returned application.
011. Start with the school and program
Before the document checklist, confirm the DLI, campus, program, credential, intake, delivery mode, and PGWP details if post-graduation work matters. IRCC says you need an LOA from a DLI to apply for a study permit, and post-secondary schools may be asked to validate that LOA.
022. Build the core document spine
IRCC's document page lists the common core: letter of acceptance, PAL/TAL in most cases, proof of identity, proof of funds, letter of explanation, and medical, police, custodian, country-specific, or other documents when needed. Do not assume every applicant needs the same file.
| Document | Purpose | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| LOA | Shows the school admitted you. | Uploading extra documents in the LOA slot. |
| PAL/TAL or CAQ | Shows provincial/territorial allocation or Quebec authorization where required. | Waiting to get it after submitting. |
| Proof of identity | Passport or travel document. | Passport expiry conflicts with study plan. |
| Proof of funds | Shows support for you and family members. | Treating minimum funds as real budget. |
| Explanation letter | Explains purpose and responsibilities. | Generic SOP that ignores the file. |
033. PAL/TAL is not an afterthought
IRCC says the PAL/TAL is usually required, is provided by the DLI, and should be submitted with the study permit application, not after. Quebec usually uses a CAQ instead. Exemptions exist, including some degree-granting master's and doctoral programs at public DLIs starting January 1, 2026, but you must provide proof if claiming an exemption.
Verify before upload: whether you need PAL/TAL, CAQ, or exemption proof; whether the letter is valid for the cap year; and whether changing school or level requires a new one.
044. Check country-specific instructions
IRCC says there may be documents specific to the local visa office. Your online tool and country instructions matter. Police certificates, medical exams, biometrics, translations, family documents, or evidence of current status in another country can change the file.
055. Save the file as if you will need it twice
Keep every submitted document, receipt, application number, webform, school email, LOA validation issue, PAL/TAL, CAQ, and decision letter. If the application is returned, refused, or needs explanation later, the clean file saves time.
Name files clearly before uploading: passport, LOA, PAL-TAL, proof-of-funds, explanation-letter, transcript, medical, police, and country-specific documents. Use dates in file names. Keep originals separate from compressed upload copies. The moment you need to reapply, update, or answer a request, messy file names become a real cost.
Finally, do not let a recruiter be the only person who understands your application. You should be able to explain every document yourself: what it proves, where it was uploaded, and which current rule it answers.
